A love of cork

Liga has a strong passion for cork – a material they see as the perfect choice for sustainable homeware. Here is why.

• Cork is a remarkable natural resource. Liga's cork comes from the Montado forests of Portugal, where the bark is harvested gently and by hand every nine years – without harming the trees.
• Cork breathes. The natural movement of air and moisture makes the material ideal for coasters and placemats: non-slip, heat insulating and quiet against the table.
• Cork is good for the planet. Cork oak forests absorb around 32 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, with the oaks in Portugal accounting for about 10 million tonnes. Every cork product you choose helps preserve those forests.

Four series, four material combinations

Every series is built on cork from Portugal. What separates them is what the cork is combined with:

• Natural – pure, untreated cork. The warmest and lightest of the four.
• Smoked – naturally smoked organic cork. The smoking darkens the material without dye or coating, so the shade comes from the cork itself.
• Beach Clean – cork combined with recycled EVA plastic. Each piece takes its own colour combination from the recycled material, so no two are alike.
• Dash – cork combined with recycled rubber. The hardest-wearing of the four.

Two sizes

The series come as placemats for plates and serving dishes, and as coasters in a smaller format. Cork does the same job in both: it insulates heat, sits firmly and protects the table surface from stains and scratches.
